If you don't typically cook your meals at home, chances are more of your paycheck is going to take-out and restaurant meals than you even realize. This really adds up. You may also have the best intentions of cooking but because of poor planning or lack of energy or being too hungry when it comes time to cook, you break down and order out and by the end of the week most of the food you had planned to cook during the week ends up in the trash.

In my programs I help others by teaching them how to plan meals and shop effectively, and how to cook delicious meals at home with fresh, whole ingredients. You will save money and have more control over what is going into your food, and into your body. It's amazing the changes I see in my client's lives when cooking is reintegrated into their routines.

Top Five Reasons to Cook at Home:

-Add up a typical week's expenses for meals and snacks bought out. If you buy 1-2 meals out per day plus a coffee or other snacks, it could easily be costing you over $25 per day-that's over $175/week.

-Cook once, eat twice. In my programs, I recommend whole-food meals that are as simple to prepare as they are delicious and you will most likely be able to eat it more than once. For example, if you cook a big pot of brown rice, you can make a stir fry and then use the unused portion for a breakfast porridge or a sweet treat such as rice pudding.

-Cooking is healing. Chopping vegetables, measuring, stirring and tending to food with care can be meditative and relaxing. Taking the time to cook for yourself and your family is deeply nourishing for both body and spirit.

-You know what exactly is going into your food. As you become more aware of what you are eating and feeding as fuel to your body and cells, the quality of this fuel becomes very important. For instance, when eating out, chances are the quality of cooking oils is questionable, and most likely the produce or meats are not organic unless specifically stated.

-Bonding at home over meals makes families and relationships stronger. With most of the day spent outside the home and families separated for work and school, eating a home cooked meal, conversing and talking about your day, laughing, looking at each other and listening is a way to reconnect that most of us are literally starved for. Also, in the comfort of home, we are able to relax more, making digestion more efficient.

Here's reason to keep enjoying the juiciest of fruits:

In addition to being high in antioxidants, watermelon is also great at removing toxins and ammonia from the body. There is also rising evidence that it is able to help relax blood vessels and improve circulation, having the same basic effect as Viagra, without the side effects of drugs (but, sorry guys-it's probably not organ-specific!) Still, this is one juicy fruit to keep eating all summer long and on a very basic level-a good way to replenish lost fluid on hot days.

Feeling out of balance?

Yin and Yang qualities are based on the Chinese philosophy of opposites which can describe food and lifestyle choices. Some say it can be an oversimplified way of thinking, and on the other hand it can be said that the simplicity allows one to be able to easily see the imbalance in a person being diet, lifestyle or relationship. We all have some of each quality but usually we are one more than the other. In terms of diet, it can be a way to breakdown cravings: for example, if you eat too many raw foods (Yin), you may crave cooked or over cooked (Yang) foods to compensate for the imbalance. If you eat a lot of salty food (Yang) you may have strong craving for sweets (Yin).

Clutter plays a major part in draining our energy, at home and at work. It can also play a part in attributing to chronic stress and illness if it is pushed aside, piling up and seemingly non-stop and out of control in your environment. So, in honor of Earth Day this year I thought I'd do a post about how to get rid of junk mail (for good) and help save a forest-and help your home or office (and you) get a little bit healthier in the process.

If you live in New York state, here's how to stop the insanity and save many trees!

Write to:
Direct Marketing Association
P.O. While I was prone to sore throats as a child, my sister fell ill to ear infections frequently, and usually at the most inopportune times. I remember trips to the emergency room on Christmas Eve, then again on New Year's Eve, my sister tugging at her ears and screaming all the way to and from. Following in this tradition, my son has a middle ear infection in both ears, one perforated, just in time for Easter! He is miserable. It took two trips to the pediatrician to get the right antibiotic to do the trick. I did feel proud though when his Dr. couldn't believe that at the age of almost 3, he has never been on antibiotics or had any type of ear infection. I attribute his good fortune to his lengthened breastfeeding (which has just recently waned) and good nutrition.

Though he is on antibiotics now for the infection, I have been questioning it's effectiveness as a lot of strains of bacteria are becoming antibiotic resistant, partly from over prescribing. In fact, took two different antibiotics to finally kick the bacteria out of my son's ears.

While it has been estimated that 75 percent of all children by the age of three will get some type of ear infection, there may be ways to cut down on the chances of your child getting ear infections, especially those that are re-occurring and may cause permanent damage to the ears.

My tips include:

-Breastfeeding your child for as long as possible. Studies have shown that breastfeeding provides
your child with antibodies that help prevent infection and boost immunity. Breastfeeding a toddler has its challenges but also its benefits when you notice that your child seems to get sick a lot less than non-breastfed peers.

-Avoid pacifiers, whose sucking action (which is different than sucking on a human nipple) has been linked to more ear infections

-If your baby is bottle-fed and has frequent ear infections, the culprit may be the milk derived formula. You can switch over to a soy milk or rice milk based formula

-Cut back on the milk products in general (linked to excess mucous production) and sugars-especially any candy, simple carbohydrates, baked goods (cookies, bagels, cakes, etc.) and too much fruit juices which can lower immune response

-Give your child a pro-biotic supplement (the same good bacteria found in yogurt, just stronger) -especially if he/she is frequently on antibiotics. These can be easily added to food and drink without notice.

Along the lines of pro-biotics, the website from the renowned Dr. Greene (www.drgreeene.org) recently posted this breaking news on preventing ear infections using beneficial bacteria:

"Researchers in Sweden identified a group of 108 ear-infection
prone children, and gave half of them a nasal spray containing a live
culture of beneficial bacteria. The others received a placebo nasal
spray. Each received two 10-day courses. The results were published in
the March 2001 British Medical Journal At the end of 3 months,
nearly twice as many of the children in the beneficial bacteria group
were healthy and ear infection free!"

This is great news and makes a whole lot of sense to me in a time when antibiotics are showing to be less and less effective against mutating strains of bacteria that have found a way to beat our best lines of defense.

Then I came across this Blog: Z Report on Plastic Sippy Cups and BPA
which has done all of the work for me! It is an incredibly thorough
list of cups and bottles all tested by their 2.5 yr old and researched
for cups and bottles containing BPA. It's also a great site for all
things kids, baby and parent friendly that I highly recommend checking
out.

Turns out, all of my sons sippy cups are BPA free! This is great for my
bank account since some of these cups are quite pricey. I still think
it is a good idea to replace all worn out cups made of any kind of
plastic and if you are still concerned about BPA, go for stainless
steel (Klean Kanteen).
Despite some wacky warmer weather we've been having here in New York this month, as a recent snow storm just proved, winter is still in full effect. The nights are still chilly and our house is brrrrr cold. My son kicks off blankets in his sleep and wakes up with hands and feet like little icicles. We used to dress him in the typical polyester footed sleepers until we realized that doing so was possibly exposing him to dangerous flame retardants, PBDE's (polybrominated diphenyl ethers known to cause thyroid problems in lab rats and is linked to neurological damage) used to protect children from catching on fire. Unfortunately, initially intended as an precautionary additive to consumer products such as sofas, textiles, clothing and electronics to make us all safer, these dangerous chemicals are now in most of our bodies at alarmingly high levels, and with a structural similarity to PCB's (Polychlorinated Biphenyls banned in the USA in 1977 but still present in the environment) which are known to have neurotoxic and carcinogenic effects.

This is an issue that makes my head spin.
All polyester sleepwear (and day-wear) is extremely flammable due to
the inherent make-up of the material. Hence, the need for flame
retardant. Cotton and clothing made from natural fibers are naturally
flame retardant. Since the 70's all polyester sleepwear by law must be
treated with (PBDEs)- chemicals to make it less likely to catch on
fire. Cotton sleepwear garments are required by law to state-"not
flame retardant-wear snug-fitting". The issue for me is that in the
case of a fire, it won't seem to matter WHAT the child is wearing.
During sleep, most deaths occur from smoke inhalation, not from a
garment catching on fire. And if the clothing is that flammable, how
do you really feel about your child wearing all of the polyester fleece
clothing (which ironically is not treated) when the child is most
active during the day and has more of a chance of coming into contact
with fireplaces, candles and other sources of open flame?

So
on my quest to try to reduce the amount of unnecessary industrial
chemicals my son is exposed to, and to lessen his flammability
potential, I have been searching for non-flame retardant
pajamas-preferably cotton flannel, which is soft, naturally flame
retardant and very warm. The only place I could find affordable, real
cotton flannel (many companies call polyester, chemically treated
blends "flannel" so note the difference) was at www.garnethill.com.

Garnethill.com has a really cute selection of two piece sets for toddlers, big kids
and infants they describe as "Our exclusive German flannel is an
inherently flame-resistant,
cotton-rich fabric that is exceptionally soft, yet meets the federal
requirements for sleepwear without chemical flame-retardant treatment.
Classic button-front top and elastic-waist bottoms. 65% cotton/35%
modacrylic." The toddler/kids sets are on sale now for $18 (from $44) each- a great deal! You can buy them here: Garnet Hill-German Flannel Kids Pajamas

My only question then was "what is modacrylic"?

According to Wikapedia: "Modacrylic has properties that are similar to acrylic, however,
Modacrylic is flame retardant and does not combust. The fibers are
difficult to ignite and will self-extinguish. In addition to
modacrylic's flame retardant properties it has a relatively high
durability that is comparable to wool."

OK,
so the pajamas are not 100% cotton, but a cotton/modacrylic blend sure
beats dangerous chemicals next to my son's skin. To keep extra extra
warm on cold nights, I also layer my son in a zip-up cotton one piece
pajama underneath the flannel set which keeps his feet and legs warm
when he kicks those covers off.

For more information on flame retardants and other chemicals in our
kids' bodies as well as results from new body-burden testing here's a
great article from CNN: Tests Reveal High Chemical Levels In Kids' Bodies

This
article sure poses a lot to think about in terms of what kinds of laws
are being passed to allow so many chemicals to still be present in our
daily lives, most of which have not been tested for their effects in
humans. I'm sure not ready to be a guinea pig or let my children be the
test subjects for all the new chemicals introduced into our environment
without more strict regulations being put into action. You'll be
hearing a lot more from me on this subject!

So you toss the flame-retardant pj's, but are concerned now about PBDE's in your child's crib-
here's a link to a great run-down on traditional crib mattresses vs.
organic cotton crib mattresses (non-chemically treated):
A Child Grows In Brooklyn- Blog Part I
A Child Grows In Brooklyn-Blog Part II

More info on PBDE's:
PBDE's Found in Mothers and Children

More info on PCB's:
FAQ's on PCB's

Have something to say on the subject?
Are You Drinking Enough Water?

Most people are chronically dehydrated and don't even realize it. Coffee, caffeinated carbonated beverages and simply forgetting to drink enough during the day are major contributors to dehydration. Subtle and not so subtle signs include fatigue, weakness, a "spacey" feeling, dry skin, nails and hair, constipation, poor digestion and absorption of foods. Children can also get dehydrated easily, especially if they are sick, so it's important to make sure that they are drinking enough fluids throughout the day as well.

One way to figure out how many cups of water you need to drink for your particular body is by multiplying your weight by .5- this will give you the number of fluid ounces your body needs- then take that number and divide by eight. This last number will give you a good estimate of how many cups of fluid you need a day. If you are pregnant, nursing, exercising vigorously or live in a warmer climate, it is always a good idea to drink a little more throughout the day.

If you have trouble drinking water-I know a lot of people don't like
the "plain" taste, try adding a squeeze of lemon or a splash of
natural fruit juice (with no added sugars) to your water bottle.
Non-caffeinated herbal teas are also a great option, hot or cold.
Pureed vegetable soups such as butternut squash, carrot, or broccoli
are also terrific way to add more fluid (and veggies) into your diet.
Most fruits and vegetables also contain a good amount of water as
well-all melons, bok choy, apples, oranges are some good examples.

Some people also complain that when they drink a lot of water it makes
them feel bloated or nauseas. In this case, try not to down a glass of
water all at once-take small sips throughout the day. Also, don't
drink too much water on an empty stomach, which can lead to the
bloating and nauseated feeling some people get.

Most of all, pay attention to your body's signs for water and thirst. A
lot of us get thirsty, then get so busy we ignore the sensation and
simply forget to drink. Keeping a water bottle on hand throughout the
day will encourage you to drink more.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a chemical found in many plastics. Numerous studies have found that it can be an endocrine (hormone) disruptor in animals and there is concern that this chemical is leaching into our food, water and having the most affect on children under 2, as their bodies take in more of anything they are exposed to. Concerned about my son's plastic sippy cups, I asked my mother recently what she used with me when I was a kid-when sippy cups weren't all the rage yet. She said-"You either nursed or just drank from a cup!" Seems so simple!

These days, most of our foods are wrapped or packaged in plastics-yes, even the healthy organic ones! If you are concerned about lessening your family's exposure to potentially harmful chemicals, stainless steel canteens and sippy cups are now available.

Though more expensive than a plastic sippy cup or water bottle, it's
well worth the money. If you are concerned about chemicals in your

If a stainless steel bottle does not fit into your budget, or you find
it does not fit with your lifestyle, one way to minimize this chemical
coming into your household is to check the symbol on the bottom of
plastic containers and look for the number 1, 2, 4, or 5 over
#7 (polycarbonate). Throw out all worn sippy cups, especially ones
that have gone through many washings in the dishwasher at high heat and
have started to degrade. I also recommend re-heating all food in glass
containers as heating plastic can cause chemicals to leach directly
into food.
Last thought: It's best not to obsess. I know, but you do the best
you can. Even if you don't use a stainless steel water bottle or

family's exposure to unnecessary chemicals one step at a time. As for
clean and chemical free water...that's for another post!
